What are the Dental Hygiene Boards?
To become a licensed Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH), you must pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) — a standardized written exam administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and required for licensure in all 50 U.S. states and Washington D.C.
The NBDHE consists of 350 multiple-choice questions: 200 discipline-based questions testing scientific knowledge, and 150 case-based questions that present real patient scenarios. A scaled score of 75 or higher is required to pass. The exam covers 8 core content areas: Anatomic Sciences, Physiology & Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Community Health, Clinical Dental Hygiene Sciences, and Patient Case Studies.
